The vast majority of Americans share in our commitment to protect the interests of Israel’s citizens. But regardless of our political affiliations…we swear alligiance to our commander in chief. In short, Prime Minister Netanyahu disgusted me with his public display against president Obama’s speech. Netanyahu does no favor toward a often ONE-SIDED relationship. American trust is earned and not easily dismantled, but Israel lost my support as of today.

Can someone explain why Palestinian statehood would be particularly damaging to Israel? Wouldn’t having a Palestinian state where Palestinian refugees could be assimilated decrease the legitimacy of Arab demands for a “right of return” that would flood Israel and eradicate it as a Jewish state?

Marc,
I am not sure where you got this idea. As an Israeli I can attest that most of the people in Israel want and wish for peace and the end of war. It has been exhausting and doesn’t do any good to either the Israelis nor the Palestinians.
That being said, it is also important to understand that Israel cannot implement peace by itself. It needs a partner in order to be able to sustain a peaceful and meaningful life in co-existence. Such peace has to be relying on solid foundation that will ensure the Israelis with the security and peace of mind they are seeking. It also has to define clear borders between Israel and the Palestinian state. Such peace agreement has to rely on the foundation of trust and mutual respect of both sides and most of all – acknowledging each other right to exist.
Unfortunately, over the past years the Palestinians provoked Israel with numerous terror activities that made Israel even though they both were engaged in peace negotiation. In addition the Palestinian declaration of independence contain a clause calling to the destruction of Israel. Ever since Oslo meetings, Israel requested the Palestinians again and again to remove this clause as an act of good faith. The Palestinians not only did not remove it but announced many times that they will never remove it.
This is only the tip of the iceberg, showing why the Israelis may seem hesitating to make additional concessions in order to push the peace process forward. In fact at some point Israel was willing to go the extra mile and offered the Palestinians full deployment of all of their requirements however the Palestinians then refused and came up with an “upgraded” list of new demands.
I think if we look at the history of the world, the state always seemed the bad guy when it fought the minority. However, in this particular case, the state is equally victimized compared to the minority.
