As an outside observer to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, who lived most of my youth under South Africa's apartheid regime, I cannot fathom how the Israeli government imagines that this invasion, on top of the inhuman blockade of Gaza, will solve any long-term problems for Israel. It appears to me to be an act of desperation and frustration, not a well-thought strategic choice.

I add my voice to those who call for a ceasefire and negotiations. Israel must find a reasonable proposal that gives Palestinians a future if it has any hope of achieving a lasting peace. The current slaughter of hundred of civilians in a crude attempt to wipe out Hamas is grossly out of proportion to the persistant, though amateur, but fatal rocket attacks conducted by Hamas. I am saddened that Israel is at risk of losing sympathy and support from a wide range of people, and of encouraging stronger, more radical, violent opposition in the region through its actions, which it will regret for decades to come.
